Are cruises good for honeymoons? Short answer: yes, absolutely. But let me back that up with more than just my opinion.
As a travel advisor who specializes in cruises, I’ve planned honeymoon cruises for couples heading to the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, and I’ve seen firsthand why this style of trip works so well for newlyweds. After designing dozens of custom itineraries for couples at Vibes and Voyages, I’ve noticed a major pattern: newlyweds want rest, but they also don’t want to be bored. If you’re on the fence about whether a cruise is the right call for your honeymoon, here’s what I’ve learned from actually planning these trips.
Why a Cruise Is a Great Choice for Your Honeymoon
After a wedding, most couples are looking for two things that seem like opposites: rest, and adventure. You’ve just spent months (maybe longer) in planning mode, and you want to relax. But you also want your honeymoon to feel special and memorable, not just a week at a resort.
A cruise gives you both. You unpack once and then get to wake up in a new place every day or two. One morning you’re exploring a new island, the next you’re relaxing on a balcony watching the water go by. For couples who love to travel and want to see multiple destinations without the logistics of booking flights and hotels between each one, it’s hard to beat.
My favorite regions for honeymoon cruises are the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, and depending on what you’re drawn to, river cruising can be a beautiful option too.
What This Actually Looks Like: Two Real Examples
A Southern Caribbean Honeymoon
One couple I worked with wanted to skip the typical Caribbean stops and explore the southern islands instead. We booked a cruise out of San Juan with stops in St. Lucia, St. Thomas, and a few other southern Caribbean destinations. They had specific excursions in mind, including a particular type of snorkeling, so we made sure those were locked in ahead of time.
We also built in a few days in San Juan before the cruise, so they got to explore that city too instead of just flying in and getting straight on a ship.
A Mediterranean Honeymoon
Another couple wanted something romantic with a side of “we’ve never been to Europe before.” We planned a cruise out of Barcelona with stops in Italy and France.
One detail that made a real difference: when a cruise stops in “Rome,” the port is actually about an hour outside the city. If you don’t plan that excursion ahead of time, you can end up wasting hours of your limited port day just figuring out transportation. We had that mapped out before they ever stepped on the ship.
We also made sure they flew in a few days early. For Mediterranean cruises especially, this matters for two reasons. It gives you time to adjust to the jet lag, since nobody wants to spend their honeymoon exhausted, and it builds in a buffer so a flight delay doesn’t turn into a missed ship.
But Is It Really Romantic?
This is the concern I hear most, and I get it. When people picture a cruise, they sometimes picture crowds, buffet lines, and zero alone time. Totally understandable, but not the full picture.
A balcony cabin solves a lot of this on its own. It gives you a private space that’s just yours, with an ocean view, where you can have your coffee in the morning or a quiet drink at night without needing to go anywhere or be around anyone else.
And if you want even more privacy, there’s a whole world of smaller ship and luxury cruising that delivers exactly that vibe. The idea that cruising means giant ships and huge crowds just isn’t true across the board anymore. There’s a type of cruise for whatever kind of honeymoon you’re picturing, and it can absolutely match the privacy and quiet of an all-inclusive resort.
My Top Honeymoon Cruise Line Recommendations
If you want my actual recommendations and not just general info, here’s where I’d point you.
Virgin Voyages
This is my specialty, and for a honeymoon, the adults-only environment makes a real difference. No kids running around means a different atmosphere altogether. It’s modern, stylish, and built with couples and adult travelers in mind.
Some of the perks I love pointing out to honeymooners:
- Most balcony cabins come with a hammock on the terrace (there’s one cabin category where it’s hit or miss, but as your travel advisor, I’ll make sure you get one with a hammock)
- Virgin Voyages offers Splash of Romance packages for honeymooners, which include perks like priority boarding, a bottle of champagne, chocolates, thermal spa passes, and a cocktail party
- No formal dining rooms or buffets. Instead, you choose from a variety of restaurants included in your fare, so every meal feels like a date night
- The ships have an adult, upscale feel without being stuffy. Think more boutique hotel than traditional cruise ship
- Built-in social spaces and events if you do want to meet other couples, but plenty of quiet spots if you don’t
Explora Journeys
If Virgin Voyages sounds like a bit more energy than you’re looking for, Explora Journeys is the other end of the spectrum. This is where I’d point couples who want a more luxury experience, especially if you’re craving something quiet and low-key after months of wedding planning. Every cabin is a balcony suite, the ships carry far fewer guests than the mega ships, and there are minimal children on board. It never feels crowded, and the whole experience feels elevated.
A few things that make this line stand out for honeymooners:
- Every single suite comes with its own balcony, so privacy is built into the entire ship, not just a few cabin categories
- The smaller passenger count means a quieter, more personal feel throughout the ship, from dining to the pool deck
- The dining and service style lean closer to a five-star hotel than a traditional cruise, which is perfect if you’re looking for that extra layer of luxury on your honeymoon
Best Itinerary for Honeymooners
The Mediterranean is one of my favorite honeymoon regions. You get to experience multiple countries, see things you’ve never seen, and still only unpack once. Pair it with either Virgin Voyages or Explora Journeys and you’ve got a honeymoon that feels both relaxing and like a real adventure.
Who a Honeymoon Cruise Might Not Be Right For
As much as I love this style of trip, it’s not the right fit for everyone, and I think it’s worth being honest about that.
If you and your partner are dreaming of a honeymoon with zero set schedule, where you can change your mind about plans on a whim with no structure at all, a cruise might feel more confining than relaxing. Ports have set departure times, and excursions usually need to be booked in advance.
If either of you struggles with motion sickness and you’re worried it could affect your whole trip, that’s worth talking through before booking. There are ways to plan around it (cabin location matters, and some itineraries have calmer seas than others), but it’s a real consideration.
And if your idea of a honeymoon is staying in one place the entire time, fully unpacking, and never thinking about a schedule again, a resort stay might genuinely be the better fit. There’s no wrong answer here. It’s just about knowing what you actually want from the trip.
